Erik Niemann - Artist Statement
Erik uses flat metal tools to create acrylic paintings that
explore spatial depth and beauty.  His art creates moods
of mystery and wonder in an elegant and architectural
kind of way.  Erik is intrigued by the possible unseen
forces, structures and realities which lie just beneath his
normal, everyday experience of life.

"When I paint, layers, colors and patterns re-emerge by a
process of scraping.  My architectural experience is
somehow always there, guiding me though the creation
of each painting."

Erik started painting in architecture school in the mid
1990s.  Then, he used flat tools to paint chipboard for
architectural models.  In 2002, while on an 18-month trip
around the world with his wife Jennifer, he started
painting professionally and knew this was his life's purpose.

Since 2002, well over one hundred of Erik's paintings have
been on public display around the United States.  More
than one hundred paintings have been collected
throughout ten US states as well as Australia and Mexico.

In late 2007, Erik was selected to have his art represented
by the SFMOMA Artist Gallery in San Francisco.  In 2008,
three of Erik's paintings will be displayed for 2-1/2 years at
the United States Embassy in Dili, Timore-Leste (formally
known as East Timor) through the
ART in Embassies
program of the United States State Department.

Erik was born in 1971 in California, and is a self-taught
artist.  His architecture education was in California,
Kansas, Copenhagen, Denmark and London, England.
